Roverella
Quercus pubescens Wild.
La roverella è una pianta dall’aspetto maestoso, ha una chioma alta e vigorosa e una corteccia di colore grigio con fessure longitudinali. La sua altezza può superare i 20 m. L’albero ha le foglie caduche. Queste, munite di lobi dalla forma arrotondata, restano secche per tutto l’inverno fino alla comparsa di quelle nuove. Fiorisce in aprile-maggio con fiori maschili e femminili; in autunno compaiono le prime ghiande, frutti secchi e indeiscenti di forma ovoidale, con cupola a scaglie e leggermente pubescente. La pianta è molto diffusa nelle zone mediterranee. Il suo legno è stato usato per la costruzione di binari ferroviari, mentre le sue ghiande vengono oggi impiegate in ambito zootecnico, ma nell’antichità ne usufruiva anche l’uomo come alimento.
Downy Oak
It is a majestic tree, with a thick, vigorous crown and grey bark cracked into furrows. It can exceed 20 metres in height and has deciduous leaves with rounded lobes. The dry leaves stay on the tree throughout the winter until the appearance of the new leaves. It blossoms in April-May with both male and female flowers and the first acorns appear in autumn. These are dry indehiscent ovoid fruits with scaled, slightly hairy cup. The downy oak is widespread in the Mediterranean area. Its wood is used to make railway sleepers and its acorns are used as fodder although in the past men used to eat them. It is also used in homeopathy to treat abdominal pain, dysentery, dry cough.
