Rhamnus alaternus L.
La pianta di Rhamnus è un arbusto dalla chioma compatta e tondeggiante che può raggiungere i cinque metri di altezza; le foglie sono di colore verde lucido superiormente e verde-giallo inferiormente. Produce piccoli fiori gialli profumati che sbocciano da febbraio ad aprile, seguiti da frutti di colore rosso-bruno. È diffuso nei pendii collinari calcarei, nelle fenditure della roccia, nel sottobosco delle regioni a clima mediterraneo dal livello del mare fino ai 700 m di altitudine. Tra ‘700 e ‘800 è stato utilizzato per la realizzazione di siepi e macchie nei parchi delle ville nobiliari di tutt’Italia; attualmente viene impiegato come pianta da barriera frangivento in prossimità del mare.
Mediterranean Buckthorn
It is an evergreen shrub, its foliage is rounded and compact, it can reach five metres in height. Its leaves are glossy green in the upper face and green-yellow in the lower one. It produces small yellow perfumed flowers blooming from February to April, followed by red-brown fruits. It grows in calcareous hilly slopes or in rocky fissures and in the undergrowth of regions with a Mediterranean climate, from the sea level to 700 m of altitude. Between XVIII and XIX century it was used to arrange hedges and scrubs in parks of noble villas all over Italy, now it is used for windbreak barriers near the sea.
