Laurus nobilis L.
L’alloro è una pianta che cresce bene in tutti i terreni e può essere coltivato in qualsiasi tipo di orto o giardino. Si presenta in forma di arbusto di varie dimensioni poiché spesso è sottoposto a potatura, ma può apparire come un vero e proprio albero alto fino a 10 m con rami sottili e glabri che formano una densa corona piramidale. Il legno della pianta è aromatico ed emana il tipico profumo delle foglie. Il fusto è eretto e la corteccia è verde nerastra. Le foglie sono verde scuro, coriacee, lucide nella pagina superiore e opache in quella inferiore, sono inoltre molto profumate. È diffuso lungo le zone costiere settentrionali del Mar Mediterraneo, dalla Spagna alla Grecia e nell’Asia Minore. In Italia cresce spontaneamente nelle zone centro-meridionali e lungo le coste, mentre nelle regioni settentrionali è coltivato.
Bay Laurel
It is an aromatic officinal plant which thrives in all types of soil and can be grown in any garden. It is usually pruned in the shape of a shrub but it is a real tree up to 10 metres tall, with thin, glabrous branches forming a thick, cone-shaped crown. Its wood is aromatic and it emanates the typical smell of the leaves. It has an upright trunk and green-blackish bark. The ovate leaves are dark green, tough, shiny on the upper side, opaque on the underside and are very fragrant. The bay laurel is widespread along the northern coast of the Mediterranean Sea, in Spain, Greece and Asia Minor. In Italy it grows spontaneously in the central southern areas and along the coast, while it is grown in the northern regions.
